here are some positions I hold / have held:
Co-Investigator, ‘Spatial theories of linguistic and cultural evolution’October 2018 - September 2020
in this project (funded by a Royal Society APEX grant), our aim is to develop minimal, experimentally verified spatial models of linguistic and cultural evolution. we believe that many processes which control linguistic and cultural change are inherently spatial in origin and operate on a wide range of scales. we aim to explore linguistic (particularly dialectological) datasets with methods and ideas from statistical physics
Research Fellow, Gonville & Caius CollegeOctober 2017 - September 2021
four-year research fellowship at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. during the fellowship I will be focusing on the dynamics of linguistic diffusion processes in medieval and modern Norwegian: what determines the pathways particular linguistic innovations take? how do human and physical geographical factors determine these pathways?
Co-Investigator, ‘Investigating the diffusion of morphosyntactic innovations using social media’September 2017 - August 2020
in this ESRC-funded project we are developing large corpora of data from social media (primarily twitter) in Norwegian, Welsh, Turkish and British English. we are using these to investigate ongoing morphosyntactic change and map linguistic diffusion in these four languages.
Research Assistant, Bristol Centre for LinguisticsJune 2017 - August 2017
working as an RA for the ‘Sounds Bristolian’ project, undertaking phonetic, corpus and statistical analysis of phonological and syntactic data
Research Assistant, University of CambridgeFebruary 2017 - April 2017
