in this project (funded by a Royal Society APEX grant), our aim is to develop minimal, experimentally verified spatial models of linguistic and cultural evolution. we believe that many processes which control linguistic and cultural change are inherently spatial in origin and operate on a wide range of scales. we aim to explore linguistic (particularly dialectological) datasets with methods and ideas from statistical physics

four-year research fellowship at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge. during the fellowship I will be focusing on the dynamics of linguistic diffusion processes in medieval and modern Norwegian: what determines the pathways particular linguistic innovations take? how do human and physical geographical factors determine these pathways?
Co-Investigator, ‘Investigating the diffusion of morphosyntactic innovations using social media’September 2017 - July 2021
in this ESRC-funded project we are developing large corpora of data from social media (primarily twitter) in Norwegian, Welsh, Turkish and British English. we are using these to investigate ongoing morphosyntactic change and map linguistic diffusion in these four languages.
